Visiting Ambleside

Ambleside is a very pretty town situated at the head of Lake Windermere in Cumbria. The town is within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. This is one of the most beautiful areas of England and tourists flock here from all over the world.

The flowers beside Windermere inspired William Wordsworth to write his most famous piece of poetry ‘Daffodils’. Wordsworth’s house in nearby Randal Mount is now owned by his great-great-granddaughter. There is much to do and see in the Lakes, whether you are sporty, adventurous or laid back. The National Trust own a great many properties in the area which drawn in visitors year after year.

The nearest train station to Ambleside is 4 miles away in Windermere. From here, a taxi or bus will take you into the town. There are excellent road connections to Ambleside, with the A6 running close to the town, and many main roads are well sign posted to find your way around the area. Regular buses run throughout the Lake District taking in all the towns and villages. The nearest major airport to Ambleside is Manchester International which is 92 miles away.

Ambleside’s main economy comes from Tourism and the majority of townsfolk are employed in the tourist and hospitality sectors. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and hotels etc in the area. The nearby City of Carlisle and larger towns such as Penrith employ many in factories, offices, call centres and the like. The good travel links make commuting relatively easy.
