Whinlatter Forest – the home of adventure for all ages

Whinlatter Forest is about five minutes away from Keswick located just north of the Braithwaite village.  Here, you will find the Go Ape high ropes course that is great for adventurous adults and children, since you can follow the adults around on a free playground put in place just for the children.  The park opened up back in May of 2011 and is an excellent stop that should be part of any Northern Lake District trip.  This is just one of the many gem that you will want to take advantage of during a stay at the Keswick Cottages, but there are plenty more.

For a great array of choices head over to the Keswick Tourist Information Centre and purchase a Kids Keswick Guide for four pounds.  This guide will show you an array of Keswick shops spread out throughout the town as well as plenty of attractions.  One of these attractions is the Whinlatter Forest that features various activities for all ages with a real forestry feel as it is the only mountain forest located in England.  The Forestry Commission is responsible for maintaining the area with a visitor centre that is located about four miles away from Keswick.

Throughout the park there are plenty of great activities including orienteering trails, graded walks, nature trails, great scenic viewpoints, red squirrels, plenty of toilets, a café, and children/baby facilities.  The café is Siskins and offers homemade food with a woodland shop inside of it that also has a large screen where you can watch an osprey nest as the chicks grow from April to August.  Off to the side of the café you can find a great bike shop that offers biking courses, bikes for private hire, and some great track trailheads so that everyone can enjoy biking at the park regardless of their ability.
